Mobil DTE 10 Excel™ 46 helps Volkswagen AG enhance energy efficiency on plastic injection molding machines
Situation
Volkswagen AG manufactures plastic molded automotive parts, operating 22 injection molding machine systems of various makes, including Krauss Maffei. The machines were lubricated with a standard mineral-based hydraulic oil, and company managers hoped to upgrade the units’ performance potential. They approached ExxonMobil to determine an alternative lubricant solution capable of extending service life and alleviating the total energy demands placed on the system.
Recommendation
ExxonMobil recommended evaluating the energy efficiency potential of Mobil DTE 10 Excel™ 46 high viscosity hydraulic oil. Formulated with a shear stable, high viscosity index, Mobil DTE 10 Excel™ 46 hydraulic oil allows for maintaining maximum hydraulic efficiency and component protection in a range of operating temperatures. Furthermore, its excellent oxidation and thermal stability can help to extend oil and filter change intervals while helping to ensure system cleanliness.
Result
After transitioning to Mobil DTE 10 Excel™ 46 high viscosity hydraulic oil, Volkswagen AG maintenance personnel reported enhanced hydraulic system efficiency, generating a 3.7% energy savings on average, or approximately US $2,600 annually per machine. The reduction in energy demand corresponds to a reduction of approximately 9,000 kg of CO2 per machine, further supporting Volkswagen AG’s sustainability initiatives.
The evaluation performed by the Volkswagen AG maintenance team measured power consumption under matching production conditions during the reference and test periods.
The product performance of Mobil DTE 10 Excel™ 46, alongside the application expertise provided by local ExxonMobil engineering support, is helping to improve customer productivity potential.
